About our school
Burley St Matthias is a 210 place Church of England Primary School, one mile from the city centre in North West Leeds.
The school caters for 4 – 11 year olds in two Victorian buildings, which have undergone extensive refurbishment internally to offer modern facilities for our learners. The North Building houses the younger children from Reception to Year 2 and the South Building accommodates children from Years 3 to 6. Each building has a playground and a field. There are two spacious halls and all the classrooms are light and airy.
The staff at St Matthias school are committed to providing a high quality learning environment in which each pupil is encouraged to do their very best. The school is highly regarded in the community for providing a calm, caring and stimulating environment, where children learn through a wide variety of experiences. Pupils are taught to value and respect the diversity of religions, cultures and customs and to value one another. The last Ofsted Inspection Report found the school offered a good level of enrichment to the curriculum and applauded the quality of its teaching, particularly the positive start given to children in Reception and the stimulating final year in Year 6. They particularly praised the personal development of the pupils, reflected in their good behaviour and positive attitudes to school.
The school and the church
As a church we are very proud of our school and have developed strong links with the staff, parents and of course the pupils. We have several members of the congregation who regularly visit the school to take assemblies and a group which meets to pray for any needs that we have been made aware of. The school also visits the church several times a year for events such as the Christmas service and the Year Six Leavers service.
